We had one workshop so far in March. Kelly Woodhouse lent a hand and did some nice research. We have print-outs and demonstrated materials use including charcoal, watercolor, acrylic, crayon, tempera paint, and water-soluble oil pastels on paper and recycled cardboard and even on a palm frond. Look for AP label on art supplies.
Some supplies can be toxic at certain points along their process, such as acrylics just as they are drying and the powder of pastels or the solvents of oil paint. Generally, the heavy metals such as cadmium(reds and yellows), chromium (yellows, green), cobalt (blue), manganese (blue and purple) and always lead (white in "Flake White" oil paint) have traditionally been toxic in artists colors. Pastel colors or oil paints absorbed through the skin or inhaled (as in powder) can render an artist with chronic nerve damage.
One local artist was asked what he does to deal with toxicity of materials and he said "I make sure to sweat a lot"!
Much info and links can be found by googling "Non-Toxic Art Materials"
